Yes, that is gear oil on the ground. I got the fronts done though which is nice.
At least the coilover part was easy so far. I’m probably going to have to undo the one that leaked out my gear oil since I gotta push the axel back in. But hey I guess I’m replacing my gear oil tomorrow too which is neat!
Will continue in the AM with the rears since it got dark and I’m in no particular rush. The bottom mount bolts were a bitch on the one side to remove. I used a 10 foot pole to break the one bolt loose but it went fine after that. So far so good. Will see how out of whack my camber is after I put the rears in and put it on the ground for height check.
Alignment is getting done no matter what though. Take a ga nder at the inside edge of the tire. All four are like that, at least it’s consistent. Outer edge are trashed evenly and the center is down to the wear bar. Not perfectly worn but I don’t think anything is broken aside from the alignment specs.

Never seen a jealous diff before but there it is.
Also those are some slick looking coilovers.

Yeah, I'm very happy with my choice! Excited for how the car looks lowered a tiny bit and how it feels to drive.

Hey, are those Firestone tires? :p
Wow that coilover is tiny! It’s like half the size of the original strut!

Yeah I was kind of confused/concerned a bit at first . But it fit so perfectly so it must be the right part!

What for a car are we talking about here?

For the Subaru of course. Miata is already on coil overs. At least these are adjustable struts and worth quite a bit more money so ideally they will be less harsh. But either way, glad I don't commute far lol.

Are your wheels aftermarket? Do they have a different offset than factory? That will affect tire wear too. Honestly I think that wear pattern looks pretty decent if you want a performance-oriented alignment.

I drive a Mazda 3 which for the money, I think is an exceptional car. But it’s loud and the ride is overly harsh. One of these years, I may replace the dampers and see if that helps any. And at some point, I will buy a set of tires where ride quality is the only consideration. Michelin X, perhaps?

Yeah the wear pattern isn’t terrible but it’s had at least 50k without an alignment so it can’t hurt. Wheels are oem. Struts had 180k on them (somehow). I'm thinking the ride will get more compliant even if it's stiffer just because of the lack of surely blown struts.

It's funny because it's all relative. I haven't been driving the Subaru due to the tires. So I spent a week straight driving only the miata. The other day I drove the Subaru a short distance to a bike trail and man I forgot how quiet that car is in comparison. Just having a roof and some sound deadening makes a hell of a difference. When I had 200tw tires on the car it was definitely noisier but not significantly.

I drove the 3 a distance on the freeway some days or weeks after I bought it, and I thought I’d have to sell the car because the noise level and the ride quality. But it’s a very good driver otherwise and I’m curious to see what a set of luxurious tires might do for it.
